Colour Hello
Finally, after a day instead of rain yesterday, I opened my curtains to a day absolutely magnificent today. The green foothills of the Alps and surrounding mountains Weiz were competing with the bright blue sky to catch my attention and naturally I had to go out and explore. I started with a visit to the important pilgrimage church in my home town of Weiz. It is assumed that a church, more specifically, a Roman basilica, located on the hill above Weiz since the mid-11th century. Due to poor lighting conditions inside the church, this building was remodeled several times, until the mid 1700s a decision finally was made to replace the church with a new building. The construction of the new baroque style church began in 1757 and was completed in 1776.
The Weizbergkirche is an imposing house of worship and pilgrimage church was known as early as the 12th century. It became a very popular place of pilgrimage in the 17th century, but since then the number of pilgrims has dropped substantially. It is the largest church in the capital district of Weiz, and a landmark that can be seen in almost all postcards from my hometown. I was particularly surprised when I entered the church and saw the renovated 18th century frescoes that once again stunning the visitors with their colors and stunning detail, since its recent renovation.
Directly in front of the church is an elevated plateau, from where a good view over the city and its surroundings. A sculpture called "Balance Beam "reminds people of the transience of life. From the southern slopes of this hill is the cemetery of Weiz, with many graves dating back to several hundred years. One of the most famous graves in the cemetery belongs to Aurelia Schwarzenegger, mother of Austria's most famous export: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Then he got into my car and up the hill next highest, the "Landscha" which also overlooks the city and has been a residential area popular for decades because of its excellent views. The top of the plateau of the characteristics of a forest and fields and is a popular destination for runners and cyclists. From here I went into the woods and turned toward the east in a mountain valley called Ponigl.
A few minutes outside the city, this area is however very rural, remote and agricultural products. Various farms, some centuries old, are spread throughout the countryside and still actively involved in agriculture, either growing corn or livestock. The valley ends in a dead end and only forest roads and footpaths lead to the surrounding mountains. An area near that is known as the "Galgenwald" (Forest Gallow's), an area where local criminals were hanged until a couple of centuries ago. Many legends surrounding this area and today there is an area that has three columns of stone that were used long ago for execution by the regional court.
Past the picturesque Oberdorf village went on my next destination: Thannhausen Schloss (Castle Thannhausen), a large farm that was originally mentioned since 1177. The current version of the castle was built in Renaissance style in 1500 and has an impressive interior courtyard with semicircular arches. On a regular basis this court is used for concerts and provides a backdrop perfect for musical enjoyment.
After a trip and come back quickly through the city, I went to "Weizklamm" (Weiz River Gorge), a steeper cut in the limestone rocks surrounding it falls vertically to the Weizbach. Curiously, a regional road that has Built on the rocks and is so narrow in parts, it is impossible for two vehicles to pass each other.
I filmed the entire unit through 2.5 kilometers of Weizklamm and very often I had to stop and let one of the many transport trucks that frequent this road passes. Mirrors on the corners to help drivers to see if There is traffic approaching, and the locals are very used to driving on this narrow road between the rocks. At the top of the rock of the cliffs there is a hiking trail called "Jägersteig" (Trail Hunter), which offers excellent views over the surrounding mountains and throat.
More Beyond the ravine there is a fork in the road: on the left side leads to the rural village of Passail, and on the right side to continue along the river in a village called Schmied in der Weiz. Turn right and decided to take a steep dirt road to the mountain village of St. Kathrein am Offenegg, a popular tourist destination with hotels, restaurants and bed and breakfast.
St. Kathrein offers many hiking trails, a forest trail for Education, an herb garden for public access and ski in winter. Were already established in the Nordic Celtic times, the German settlers moved into the area in the 11th century. A church has been mentioned already in 1295 and the present church was amended and extended several times over the centuries. I turned and this small country church that is surrounded by a cemetery, and offers a beautiful view to the west, toward the Passail basin.
